Here is the beginning of my detailed study of Naomi Shihab Nye:

Naomi Shihab Nye is an American poet who is greatly influenced by her family's history of exile. Nye's work focuses on the experience of people and the relationships between people and place. One of the primary features of Nye's poems are the contrasts. In "The Garden of Abu Mahmoud," the poem focuses on a man who proudly tends his garden and shares its bounty while "Across his valley the military / settlement gleamed white." Surprisingly the presence of guns, militarism, and war are asides to the larger stories of strength and resilience that exist in Nye's work.
